A moment of indecision by a fielder can make the difference between an out or a base hit. In this case, a moment of indecision can mean a win or a loss.
The Padres took this loss especially hard. The game ended with the ball in shortstop Edgar Gonzalez hands and the score at 4-3.
Adrian Gonzalez hit his 16th homer of the year in the top of the tenth inning, a two run shot that put the Padres in a commanding position to win. Then in the bottom of the inning, things got interesting.
Trevor Hoffman took his familiar role of closing out the game on the mound. He gave up a single followed by a groundball that just found its way into the right field grass. Omar Vizquel bunted the runners over to 2nd and 3rd. Fred Lewis cleared the bases with a triple off the center field wall and tied the game at 3.
To set up a double play, Randy Winn was intentionally walked to put runners at first and third. Jose Castillo hit the ball to Gonzalez at short, but a moment of hesitation caused by Winn having taken off for second and Lewis going on contact left him with no play.
The Giants one run in the first nine frames came on an Aaron Rowand homer in the sixth.
Randy Wolf had a solid start for the Padres, going six innings allowing four hits and just one run. He also struck out five.
Tim Lincecum continued to impress in his sophomore season. He went seven innings allowing just four hits and one run. He struck out two while walking four. Lincecum has already matched his win total of his rookie year with seven.
